I had a terrible experience going to couples therapy. We arrived for a 11am appointment whom our therapist Brian was late for. We (my husband, one year old daughter, and I) waited almost a half hour for him to arrive. When he got there there was a sense of unprofessionalism the way he introduced himself to my husband but not I. He put toys on the floor for my daughter which was a very nice gesture but only asked my husband questions. I answered what medicines my husband takes as he doesn’t remember and I was corrected and told “I asked your husband”. I told my therapist my goals in therapy and he whispered to my husband that I was “extreme” as a joke. He chuckled and made me feel uncomfortable. He also asked if I was a safe person but never asked my husband questions of the such. I felt that he tried to normalize behaviors rather than giving solutions when we addressed problems. He then asked me and my one year old to leave. I waited another half hour in the waiting room for my husband to come out laughing it up with The therapist Brian. I asked my husband what they talked about and if he felt comfortable with him to schedule again. He said that after I left Brian jokes about how “extreme” I was and how he didn’t expect me to know what my goals were. Apparently that is “extreme”. Brian also decided to talk about my husbands grandmother and how he knew her and his family. They just casually chatted. My husband said that he wished they would have let me stay to talk about what we really wanted to do moving forward in therapy. And Brian’s unprofessionalism made me completely uncomfortable and has now discouraged me from any doctor recommended therapists. His actions and inappropriate “jokes” are unacceptable. I hope no one else is made to feel the way I felt today at my visit. There are other options. Do not put up with that abuse. Therapy is supposed to be a safe place. I can’t stress enough DONT GO TO RIVER HILLS! I have also noticed my review isn’t the only bad one.
