I've been holding onto this story and finally feel brave enough to share publicly. My mother was brought into the ER July 2025 where my brother and I took alternating shifts to be with her. I was told she was being transferred to comfort care. My brother and I are in our early 30s and my mother was 60. While we knew our mother wasn't well, we were not aware of the full extent of her health problems. It's hard to hear anyone will be needing hospice but especially for 2 young adults who are supposed to be the patient's advocate. Her condition was not explained well to us and my neurodivergent brother had a hard time accepting. At one point, Simon from the ER came in to explain all of the tests he ran. He was extremely impatient with us but while he was there, a nurse came in to check her catheter. He snapped at the nurse to tell her my mom does not have a catheter because she is vaginally bleeding. The nurse continues to check her perineal area and he says "You're braver than I am." Later, when we ended up going to Mercy in Pittsburg, the staff had no issues putting a catheter in her so that my mom wasn't constantly in soiled briefs. Mindi Gardner ended up being my mom's doctor in comfort care. While my mom was in her comfort care room, we invited family to see her. 8 of us total for a few hours and we gathered around to pray for my mom. The next day, my mom is kicked out before we were able to speak to a social worker to transition her to a long term health facility. I am told to take my dying, immobile mother to her primary doctor. I also find out we were kicked out because we had 12 people in the ER and were performing a SEANCE. The only time we had visitors was in her comfort care room where you are allowed visitors! And it shocks me in this extremely Christian community that a doctor would have an issue with a family praying over a loved one. My mom ends up dying maybe 36 hours after all this and it was anything but peaceful thanks to this hospital. I drove my mom to her primary, to a nursing home, ambulanced her to Mercy, ambulanced her back to the nursing home. I am giving it the 2 star rating because if you need labs, you'll have a good time, and a lady from the kitchens is a golden gem of a person. My daughter's primary physician is Dr. Bonzo in Frontenac and we love him. GMC is lucky to have Kay Quick as well. She did my first pap when she was at Freeman and successfully distracted me from the very uncomfortable procedure.
